Most of us know that carrying extra weight can affect our heart, our joints and our energy levels. But did you know it can also affect your brain? This is something we do not talk about nearly enough — and it is exactly why AMBA Care has produced our latest health awareness video.
The Link Between Weight and Brain Health
When we are overweight, our body has to work harder than it should. The heart pumps harder, blood vessels come under increased pressure and over time this extra strain can cause real damage. Blood vessels that carry oxygen to the brain can become narrowed or weakened, reducing the flow of vital nutrients that keep our minds sharp and active.
At the same time, carrying excess weight can lead to difficulties with blood sugar regulation. When blood sugar levels are consistently high or unstable, it creates an environment in the body that is simply not good for the brain.
All of this combined — the damaged blood vessels, the reduced oxygen flow, the blood sugar problems — significantly raises the risk of developing dementia later in life. Dementia is a condition that affects memory, thinking and the ability to carry out everyday tasks. It is not a normal part of growing older, and the good news is that it is not inevitable either.
The Good News — Small Changes Make a Big Difference
This is the part we really want you to hear. You do not need to completely turn your life upside down overnight. Research consistently shows that small, sustainable changes to your daily routine can have a profound and lasting impact on both your physical and mental health.
Here are three simple places to start:
- Move More — You do not need to join a gym or run a marathon. A daily walk in the park, a gentle swim or even a little dance in your kitchen counts. Every step matters. Getting your heart pumping regularly keeps your blood vessels healthy and your brain well supplied with oxygen.
- Eat Balanced Meals — Focus on adding more colour to your plate. Fresh vegetables, lean proteins, wholegrains and plenty of water give your body the fuel it needs to function well. You do not have to give up everything you enjoy — just aim for balance most of the time.
- Manage Your Weight — Even modest weight loss can make a meaningful difference to your blood pressure, blood sugar and overall brain health. Every small step in the right direction is worth celebrating.
