Dementia Services

Respite Services

Our Dementia Buddy Programme offers personalised, one-to-one support for individuals living with dementia and their carers. Trained volunteers — known as Dementia Buddies — build meaningful relationships through companionship, emotional support, and help with daily tasks. This human connection reduces loneliness, increases confidence, and provides mental stimulation for those living with dementia.

Each Buddy undergoes specialist training and holds a DBS check, ensuring professional, compassionate, and safe support. For carers, the programme provides much-needed respite and peace of mind. By fostering consistent, culturally aware relationships, this initiative empowers individuals to live with dignity and purpose.

Purple Bag Respite Service

Our Purple Bag respite service offers specialised support for individuals living with moderate to severe dementia, by providing trained Dementia Support Workers who deliver personalised one-to-one activities designed to stimulate memory, improve cognition and reduce distress. A key component of this scheme is the use of a ‘Uniquely Me’ proforma and a Memory Box. The ‘Uniquely Me’ proforma helps to tailor care to the individual’s specific needs and preferences, ensuring that the activities are meaningful and engaging for them. The Memory Box is used to store personal items and mementos that can help trigger memories and provide comfort. This approach not only benefits the personwith dementia by enhancing their cognitive function and emotional well-being, but it also offers valuable respite time for their carers. By engaging the individuals in meaningful activities, carers can have some time to rest and recharge, knowing that their loved ones are in good hands.

Uniquely Me

‘Uniquely Me’ is a person-centred care tool that captures key information about a person’s life story, preferences, routines, and communication style. This document helps carers and health professionals to understand and support each individual as a whole person, rather than focusing solely on their diagnosis.

Used effectively, it can reduce misunderstandings, ease challenging behaviour, and improve quality of care. ‘Uniquely Me’ honours the identity and dignity of the person living with dementia, promoting empathy and shared understanding in every interaction.

Meaningful Moments Social Groups

Our weekly Meaningful Moments Social Groups provide tailored activities that support people with dementia through wellbeing, identity, and social connection. By drawing on each person’s history and preferences, we help preserve dignity and autonomy. These groups reduce isolation, boost confidence, and encourage meaningful interaction, which is vital for emotional health. Sessions also promote cognitive and physical wellbeing with puzzles, gentle exercise, and other engaging activities. Designed to be flexible and inclusive, they ensure everyone can participate and benefit.

Story Circle

Story Circles are small, supportive groups where carers of people with dementia can share experiences, speak openly, and feel understood.

Benefits
  • Emotional support: Reduce stress and anxiety in a non-judgmental space.
  • Shared knowledge: Gain insights and practical tips from others in similar situations.
  • Sense of community: Build connections that lessen isolation and foster belonging.
  • Personal growth: Strengthen coping skills and resilience for overall well-being.

If caring responsibilities make attendance difficult, the person being cared for can join the Meaningful Moment Social Group, which runs at the same time.

Amba Day Centre

Our Day Centre for people with dementia provides a safe and nurturing environment that promotes social engagement and helps prevent isolation. Social interaction is crucial for individuals with dementia as it can significantly enhance their quality of life and slow down cognitive decline. At Amba Care, we offer a variety of activities designed to maintain both physical and cognitive health. These activities include cognitive stimulation exercises, music, and art programmess, all tailored to meet the needs and abilities of our attendees. In addition to the benefits for individuals with dementia, our Day Centre also offers much-needed respite for caregivers. Caring for someone with dementia can be demanding, and our centre provides caregivers with a regular break, allowing them to rest, run errands, or simply take time for themselves. This respite can help reduce caregiver stress and improve overall family wellbeing. Our Day Centre is staffed by trained and DBS-screened workers who are dedicated to providing high-quality care and support. We ensure that our environment is safe and secure, with features and supervision designed to prevent falls and restless walking. Our team is committed to creating a positive and engaging atmosphere where individuals with dementia can thrive.
